Coal chemical industry membrane concentrates: characterisation and treatment by ozonation and catalytic ozonation processes

Environmental context Reverse osmosis (RO) is widely used for the treatment of hazardous wastewaters produced from coal chemical industry (CCI) to achieve zero liquid discharge however use RO inevitably results in accumulation refractory organic matter membrane concentrate, which challenging. This work provides useful insights into composition concentrates obtained a range real CCI wastewaters. The efficacy these by ozonation processes assessed as cost effectiveness such treatment. Rationale enactment increasingly stringent regulations has prompted implementation technologies reverse management with goal achieving (ZLD). However, this practice production high salinity containing matter. Methodology In study, we characterised using variety methods including chromatography–organic carbon/nitrogen detection (LC-OCND) and investigated degradability compounds present catalytic processes. Results discussion Organic analysis LC-OCND revealed that humic-like substances low molecular weight neutral were dominant constituents examined. Measurement concentrate pure process showed efficiency (~20% dissolved carbon (DOC) removal) result nature wastewater. degradation organics employing commercially available Fe-oxide based catalyst was higher than observed although extent removal (DOC ~47%) still due well influence salts on performance. Techno-economic indicated total (homogeneous or heterogeneous) negligible compared overall complete ZLD process.
